Late Night Concert Series w/Trio Nexus Featuring Derrick Gardner
Showtimes: 10:30pm-11:45pm
Trio Nexus consists of Reginald Thomas on piano, George Fludas on drums and Dennis Carrol on upright bass and will be joined for these performances by special guest artist Derrick Gardner on trumpet.
Reginald Thomas can be seen fronting his own groups on both piano and Hammond organ and as a sideman with great artists including Hamiet Blueitt, Ann Hampton Callaway, and the Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker Ensemble. He is often seen performing with the Legendary Count Basie Band as an accompanist for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. and Los Angeles.
George Fludas was born in Chicago where his interest in drumming began when he was very young due to the influence of his father, who loved straight-ahead-swinging jazz and who played drums as a hobby. George soon developed a passion for the great recordings of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Riverside and Impulse records. Since then he has performed with a who’s who of Jazz greats, including Kenny Burrell, Betty Carter, Junior Cook, Lou Donaldson, Tommy Flanagan, Roberta Gambarini, Benny Golson, Benny Green, Eric Reed, Johnny Griffin, Roy Hargrove, Barry Harris, Hank Jones, Buddy Montgomery, David “Fathead” Newman, Nicholas Payton, Marlena Shaw, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ira Sullivan, Clark Terry, Frank Wess and Phil Woods.
Jazz trumpeter, Derrick Gardner, inspired by the finest hard-blowing funky bop bands of the 1960’s, is working to extend that great tradition as a composer, arranger, performer, leader and educator. With extraordinary, creative natural talent, Derrick quickly made his mark upon arriving on the New York jazz scene in 1991. There he began a top-flight career that has taken him around the world performing internationally with the Count Basie Orchestra, (1991-present), Frank Foster’s Loud Minority Band, Harry Connick Jr.’s Big Band, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Swiss tenor player Roman Schwaller’s European Sextet. Among his performance locales are Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, South Africa and Thailand as well as many premiere venues in the United States.
