Matt Shevitz is an in-demand musician in the jazz, blues, and popular music scenes of the Chicago area. He has performed alongside such internationally renowned jazz musicians as Dick Hyman, Ignacio Berroa, Howard Levy, Frank Capp, and Frank Wess along with blues/roots rock guitarist Eric Lindell. As an educator, his ensembles have shared the stage with such artists as Melissa Aldana, Vincent Herring, Carl Allen, Brianna Thomas, Wycliffe Gordon, Ignacio Berroa, Fareed Haque, and Dee Alexander among others. Shevitz has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, Jazz in the Park Festival (Milwaukee), Waterfront Blues Festival (Portland), Lollapalooza, and House of Blues in Chicago. He is featured regularly on 90.9FM WDCB, Chicago’s Home For Jazz, both as an interviewee and a performer. In 2018, he released his debut album as a bandleader Forward Motion and his follow-up album First Take! Live on WDCB came out in 2022. Shevitz is a professor and the Director of Jazz Ensembles at the College of DuPage and was previously on faculty at Harold Washington College. He received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance degree from the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern Univ. and a Bachelor of Science in Music from the University of Oregon.
The Matt Shevitz Quartet blends straight-ahead jazz with elements of funk, blues, and world music. The ensemble’s repertoire features both original compositions and reimagined jazz standards, focusing on a deep sense of musical interplay. According to DownBeat Magazine, Shevitz “shines with solos that threaten to burn down the place.”
