2nd Set With Juan Pastor's Chinchano
Showtimes: 6:00pm-7:15pm & 8:15pm-9:30pm
Growing up in Lima, Peru, Juan Pastor's home was always alive with traditional Peruvian folk music. Upon hearing Jazz he traveled to Chicago to learn and hone his craft, playing and touring with many great Jazz musicians. These experiences inspired original music and the start of Chinchano.
These original creations reflected Juan Pastor's diverse life experiences with the many different people with vastly different backgrounds he had learned from over time. Writing for a Jazz quintet employing Jazz forms, structures, and harmonies, but using many Peruvian folk rhythmic styles. Peruvian folk music is very diverse: there are Afro-Peruvian styles, like Landó, Festejo, and Marinera, Andean styles like Huayno that date back to Inca Empire times, and Spanish-influenced styles like Vals Peruano, and my original music reflects all of these styles.
So here you have Chinchano: a folk-music upbringing in Lima meets the fast-paced Chicago jazz scene. An expression of personal experience as a curious Peruvian musician being joined by some of Chicago's finest Jazz musicians to perform the music from my life experience.
