“Tasteful saxophonists Scott Burns, John Wojciechowski and Geof Bradfield summon up a winning and rare temporal simpatico of sound: the sound of three strong tenors, individually and in accord.” —Downbeat Magazine
This Chicago tenor saxophone trio, Tenor Time, represents a masterful convergence of three accomplished musicians who draw deeply from the city’s rich tenor tradition established by legends like Von Freeman, Johnny Griffin, Eddie Harris, and Clifford Jordan. Scott Burns, John Wojciechowski, and Geof Bradfield have forged a distinctive collaborative approach that emphasizes musical conversation over individual competition. Working in harmony and counterpoint, as well as in taut unison, they demonstrate a fiery and soulful sensibility that honors the tradition while creating something entirely their own.
Their self titled album Tenor Time on AFAR Music captures this chemistry perfectly, showcasing original compositions that span from Scott Burns’ up-tempo bebop burner “Force Majeure” to Geof Bradfield’s Ellington-influenced ballad “Some Other Sunday” and John Wojciechowski’s modal waltz “Jazz Folk Song.” The ensemble moves seamlessly between bebop burners and reflective ballads, creating the intimate atmosphere of a late-night club session where three virtuoso saxophonists have come together simply to make beautiful music. This is Chicago tenor playing at its finest—sophisticated musicianship rooted in the city’s storied saxophone heritage, presented with the kind of collective spirit that makes every performance a compelling showcase of contemporary jazz artistry.
