The Paul Abella Trio fuses jazz and jam band sensibilities into one living and breathing beast. They are tight and funky and they meld many musical influences into a cohesive whole. The band consists of Chris Bernhardt on upright bass and Billy Denk on guitar with Paul on percussion playing the cajon. This weekend the group will be featuring their interpretations of some of their favorite tunes by the ecclectic fusion rock band The Grateful Dead as well as some of their originals that were inspired by the Grateful Dead.
Most Chicago Jazz fans know Paul Abella as the music director and morning show host at WDCB. Monday through Friday, Paul’s show is known for its eclectic programming, with daily Salsa and Brass Band features, and Paul also hosts the nationally syndicated show, Notes From the Jazz Underground.
The +1 to the trio is the very talented Preyas Roy on vibraphones. Well known for his street performing along Michigan Avenue, Roy joins the trio and says this about the upcoming shows…”Excited to be playing with the Paul Abella Trio! If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what Booker T and the MGs, Fugazi, and Lorde have in common with John Scofield and the Talking Heads, this is just the show for you!”
